Rangers sneak past Falcons

After a disappointing loss to 1-4 North Marion on Friday, the Estacada Rangers snuck past no. 9-ranked LaSalle at home on Saturday.

Estacada clipped the Falcons' wings 45-44, overcoming a second-quarter, 21-point pounding.

Gladstone and Molalla each have three Capital Conference wins. Then it's Estacada and three others, including LaSalle, that have two wins. LaSalle, Cascade and Stayton are all tied, 2-2. Estacada is 2-3.

The Rangers outscored the Falcons 12-4 in the first quarter, and it paid off later.

The Falcons came screaming back with 21 points in the second quarter to take a three-point lead to the locker room at halftime, 25-22.

Junior post Houston Webb scored seven of the Rangers 12 in the final quarter to tip the scale and take the win. He was a perfect 3-for-3 from the foul line in the final period.

Estacada shot 65 percent from the foul line on Saturday night, a huge improvement from Friday night's game when they shot 46 percent. The Rangers' field goal percentage almost doubled between the two games. They shot just 29 percent on Friday but turned it up to 52 percent on Saturday.

Webb scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Rangers against LaSalle. Gama Olivares also scored 12 for Estacada. He had three steals and an assist on the night.

Jordan Nation led the Rangers' scoring effort on Friday with 10.

At North Marion High School, the Rangers began the game with a Cody Best three-pointer, but didn't hit another field goal until the second quarter. The score was close for the first few minutes, but the Huskies had amassed a 13-7 lead by the end of the first.

The Huskies took a huge lead in the second, outscoring the struggling Rangers 24-11 in the quarter.

The beating continued into the third, when North Marion scored 24 again. The Huskies were sitting atop a huge 61-30 lead at the end of three.

The Rangers will host Molalla, 3-1, on Friday, Jan. 25 at 7:15 p.m.
