Joseph B. Lukas

June 3, 1919-Jan. 16, 2008

Gresham resident Joseph B. Lukas, 88, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, of heart failure.

A public memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Willamette National Cemetery.

Joseph was born June 3, 1919, in Pauline, Neb., to John and Anna (Prochaska) Lukas. He was educated in public schools in Webster County, Neb. He moved to Oregon in the mid 1940s. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and in the National Guard in the 1960s for four years.

In the 1940s, he married Lorene Mathiesen. In 1975, he married Clara King in Vancouver, Wash.

Joseph worked at Reynolds Metals for 30 years, retiring in 1982.

He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1974, by his second wife in 1994, and by his stepdaughter, Joyce Weaver, in 2007.

Survivors include his daughter, Connie of Washington; sons, Gary of Oregon and Terry of San Diego; stepson, Wayne King of Gresham; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Cornerstone Funeral Services and Cremation is handling arrangements.

Dora L. Henson

July 9, 1927-Jan. 22, 2008

East County resident Dora L. Henson, 80, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Gresham.

No formal services will be held.

Dora was born July 9, 1927, in Salem to William and Harriet Viola (Edwards) Dinkins. She moved to Portland in the early 1930s and was educated in local schools.

She married John Henson; they separated in the 1980s.

She lived with Vincent Palumbo.

Dora worked as a certified nurse's aid at several Portland-area locations.

Her interests included working in her yard.

Survivors include her sons, Mike Palumbo of Portland and Steve Palumbo of Gresham; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Benham Rufus Sell

June 12, 1921-Jan. 19, 2008

Gresham resident Benham Rufus Sell, 88, died Saturday, Jan. 19, at Carlsberry Foster Care Home.

At his request, no formal memorial service will be held.

Benham was born June 12, 1921, in Coquille to Louis and Tulia Belle (Hollenbeak) Sell. He graduated from Powers High School in 1939.

On Nov. 29, 1948, he married Thomasina Young at St. Mary's Church in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Benham lived for most of his life in Coos County. He worked as a tree faller and bucker for Georgia Pacific for 35 years, retiring in 1983.

His interests included travel, and he was an avid baseball fan.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2008.

Survivors include his son, David Sell of Gresham; daughters, Alison Stone of Myrtle Point and Lindsay Laird of Sheboygan, Wis.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Ida Sue Underwood

Feb. 12, 1926-Jan. 13, 2008

East County resident Ida Sue Underwood, 81, died Sunday, Jan. 13, in Portland.

No memorial services were held. Private inurnment was held at Willamette National Cemetery.

Ida was born Feb. 12, 1926, in Treadway, Tenn., to David and Ella (Pilant) Day.

She married Daniel Underwood.

Ida worked as a registered nurse at Oregon Health and Science University, where she was in charge of the Regional Hemophilia Program in several western states.

She enjoyed working in her yard.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1997.

Survivors include her step-daughters, Sandra Novotny of Lakewood, Colo., and Janis Manthe of Salem; and nephew, Michael Clonce of Knoxville, Tenn.
