Music scholarship contest coming

Vocalists, pianists, and instrumentalists who reside in Clackamas County are invited to compete in the Derthick Music Club scholarship competition, held on March 7.

The Derthick Music Club consists of current and retired music professionals who have encouraged musicianship in our community and raised scholarship money for high school senior musicians with our competition for over 30 years.

'We want to support music in Clackamas Community,' said Francesca Anton, scholarship committee member.

The club awards $800 to the first place winner, and monetary awards for second and third places will be given at the discretion of the judges.

Deadline to register is Jan. 31 and students can obtain registrations forms from their high school counselors or from their music teachers.

Registration forms must be sent to Marjorie Hindman, 22 Othello, Lake Oswego, OR 97035.

The competition will take place on Friday, March 7, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Milwaukie First Baptist Church, located at 10750 SE 42nd Ave.

Participants should arrive by 12:15 p.m. to register and warm up either in practice rooms or on the stage piano, and need to stay through the competition for the reception and announcement of the winners.

Music selections/composers must be submitted at this time also; selections must be memorized and last five to seven minutes.

All scholarship competition winners must agree to perform at the April 4 Derthick Club meeting at 1p.m. to receive scholarship money.

Family and friends are welcome to attend. In addition, participants need to make certain their accompanist is available, and must bring their music with their name marked on it for the adjudicators.

If for some reason an accompanist cannot attend this event with you, please call Anton at 503-742-0186, and she will assist you in finding an accompanist.

Participants need to dress appropriately for this semi-formal event; simple lines and comfortable shoes are good.
