VCs Charisma takes second at Thurston

SPRINGFIELD - The Valley Catholic 'Charisma' dance team participated at the Thurston High School competition on Jan. 19 along with 11 other dance teams from around the state.

Charisma took second place in the 2A/3A/4A small team division, dancing 'Destiny,' performed to the Syntax song of the same name.

The Thurston competition marks the beginning of the traditional dance team season that culminates with the OSAA state competition in March.

Head coach/choreographer Jessica Anderson was pleased with her team's debut performance of about 3.5 minutes of their state routine.

'Overall, I have a young and inexperienced team that is anchored by our four seniors,' she said. 'I have given them a challenging routine and they showed great maturity in their ability to perform it at this first event.'

While the dancers celebrated their trophy, coaches Anderson and Megan Hoffman reviewed the score sheets and judges' comments on the performance.

'We achieved many of the goals we set for this first competition,' Anderson said. 'We wanted to make a statement and I am confident that we did so.'

In fact, the scores were good enough to earn the Charisma the coveted standard qualifying score that entitles the team to a guaranteed berth in the championship final round at state.

The next competition for Charisma is Feb. 2 at Sherwood.
