Lady Eagles top Sheridan

Second place Westside Christian Eagles hosted the fourth place Sheridan Spartans in league play Friday night. Sheridan jumped out to an early first quarter lead, at one point leading by seven points.

Early free throws from Grace Wentzien helped Westside stay in the chase. In the second quarter Westside began to find the basket and had a 5-point lead until the last 15 seconds of the half when Sheridan scored a quick four points.

At halftime, Westside was on top 20-19. Key Westside player, Jessica Monroe, and Sheridan's sophomore post, Amber Moser, both sat on the bench much of the second quarter due to early fouls.

Westside took control in the third quarter and opened up a 10-point lead, gained primarily from the scoring and floor leadership of junior guard, Sarah Staropoli, who tallied 13 of her game high 19 points in the second half. Staropoli also made significant defensive plays with three key steals.

Westside eventually closed out the game from the free throw line securing the 11-point victory with a final score of 59-48.

Contributing for Westside, despite limited minutes, senior post Jessica Monroe scored 14 and junior forward Grace Wentien tallied 13 points and two steals. Senior Claire Weston added five points and six rebounds, and senior Alison Brunton contributed four points.

Friday was Senior Night for the Lady Eagles, and Jessica Monroe, Allison Brunton, Claire Weston, and Laurel Ball were honored.
