The Portland Beavers' parent team, San Diego, will play exhibition games against the L.A. Dodgers in Beijing, March 14 and March 15. After the trip, Bevo manager Randy Ready will head to minor-league camp, players will start to be sent there and the farmhands will begin playing 15 games.
The Bevos open the season April 3 with an eight-game homestand.
• Former Beaver Paul McAnulty, who has two home runs, and Chase Headley, a switch-hitter who has gone 6 for 10, have been battling veteran Scott Hairston to start in left field for San Diego. … Former Beavers Craig Stansberry and Oscar Robles are contending to be the Padres' utilityman, although Callix Crabbe has the edge.
