Councilor honored by Elks

Gresham City Councilor Carol Nielsen-Hood was named citizen of the year by the Gresham Elks Lodge No. 1805 and will be officially honored at the lodge's 'Outstanding Citizens of our Community' banquet, 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 14, at the lodge, 3330 N.E. Division St.

In addition to her council service, Nielsen-Hood has served the Gresham Area Chamber of Commerce as chief executive officer for the past 10 years. Her extensive volunteer work includes roles as a founding member of the Gresham Sister City Association, on the Mt. Hood Community College Board and as executive director of the Eastside Industrial Council.

Boyd Phelps, exalted ruler of Lodge 1805, doesn't personally know Nielsen-Hood, but says her work in the community speaks for itself.

'She's spent her whole life volunteering. That's what the Elks is all about - volunteerism,' he said.

The lodge will also honor an officer from the Gresham Police Department, a city firefighter of the year and, its main award, the Elk of the year.
