Baseball: The Portland Pilots bounced back from a 16-0 loss to Oregon State and swept four games in the River City Classic in Sacramento, Calif., last week. UP's pitching continued strong in wins of 4-3 over Utah Valley State, 4-2 over Sac State and 5-3 over San Jose, and the bats came alive in a come-from-behind, 11-10 win over UC Davis, as the Pilots scored twice in the eighth inning and three times in the ninth, taking the lead on Cory Wiltshire's two-run single.
UP's pitching staff has a 3.61 ERA (3.20 not counting the OSU game), and the Pilots went into this week with a 9-4 record.
• Oregon State (5-5 entering the week) is off till Friday, when the Beavers open a three-game, weekend series at Nevada (5-6).
OSU returns home to face Pepperdine (10-3) in single games March 20 through March 22 at Goss Stadium.
Softball: Portland State (10-15) opens its home season at 4 today at Erv Lind Stadium against Mississippi Valley State. The Vikings also will be at Erv Lind for Cascade Clash tournament games at 4 p.m. Friday against Northern Illinois and at 11 a.m. Saturday, when Mississippi Valley State makes a return appearance. … Oregon State (13-13) and Oregon (17-11) will play Cascade Clash home games this week, too.
