Uncensored play must go on ... again

Sherwood Middle School students will perform 'Higher Ground' again this Saturday
by: Shanda Tice, Sherwood Middle School drama students congratulate each other after last weekend's performance of the controversial play "Higher Ground."

Didn't get a chance to see Sherwood Middle School students perform their uncensored version of "Higher Ground" last weekend? Don't worry. You'll soon get another chance.

The students will give a repeat performance this weekend at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the Portland Center for Performing Arts' Brunish Hall.

Written by Sherwood Middle School sixth-grade teacher Jennie Brown, the play confronts the harsh reality of bullying and features more than 50 Sherwood Middle School drama students.

Sherwood Middle School Principal Anna Pittioni postponed the play last month, three days before its scheduled opening, after three parents complained that the script wasn't appropriate for middle school aged students.

Pittioni had offered to host a censored version of "Higher Ground" at the middle school, but drama students rejected that offer and voted instead to look for an alternative venue.

The students performed to two packed crowds last weekend in Portland and were invited back to Brunish Hall for an encore performance.

Donations to help pay for production costs will be accepted at the door and audience members are advised to show up early for the 6 p.m. show this Saturday.
