Forest Grove boy spells fahrenheit but finishes out of the running in bee
Regional contest - Spelling competition was open to students in three counties
Timo Kirchler, a seventh-grader at the Forest Grove Community School, was eliminated in the fourth round of the fifth annual Portland Tribune/Comcast Regional Spelling Bee last Saturday at the Hollywood Theater in Portland.
The 12-year-old correctly spelled 'condor,' 'sassafras' and 'fahrenheit' before stumbling on 'ramate' during the bee.
Trevor Fonvergne of Damascus Middle School in the Gresham-Barlow School District correctly spelled 'carpaccio' to win the competition. He will compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May.
Bee participants were from Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties.
