Columbia County awarded a $675,000 contract to TFT Construction Inc. of Scappoose to make improvements to West Lane Road.

Dave Hill, director for the county Road Department, said the bid should pave the way for construction to start this summer.

'There shouldn't be any hiccups to that project,' Hill said.

In 2005, the Oregon Department of Transportation allocated $2 million for West Lane improvements needed to accommodate industrial development at Scappoose Industrial Airpark.

The project was moved up on the state priority list of projects, though several problems, including arriving at a legal definition of the road, one of the oldest in the county, continued to delay the project.

As construction cost is incurred, the county will request reimbursement from the state not exceeding the $2 million grant.

Hill said engineering and other costs are in addition to the TFT Construction contract.
