Banks track team flooded with youngsters

Bolstered by the strongest freshman turnout in almost a decade, Banks is looking forward to an exciting track and field season.

Banks head coach Rob Frank said the 20 freshmen that came out for this year's team is about double the number he usually gets, and those athletes will add to an already talented stable of returners from last year.

'This is the biggest team we've had in the last couple years,' Frank said. 'It kind of goes in waves. This year's senior class never had big numbers and last year's senior class never had big numbers. This is the biggest group we've had in probably seven, eight, maybe nine years.'

Of course, it's impossible to predict what kind of impact this year's freshman class will make since none have participated at the varsity level, but Frank sees them nicely supporting the group of returners.

'I think it's going to be a fun year,' he said. 'I don't know what a lot of them are going to do, but I'm interested to find out.'

Banks will open the 2008 season at home on Thursday against Taft and North Marion.
