Portland Beavers

The parent San Diego Padres, including Portland Beavers' manager Randy Ready, have returned from their two-game China trip to prepare for the season. Minor-leaguers will play two weeks' worth of games, and the Bevos open the 144-game Pacific Coast League season April 3 with an eight-game home stand.

• Former Bevo Justin Germano continues to battle for the No. 5 Padres' pitching spot, and he had a good, five-inning stint in China. Ex-Bevo Paul McAnulty (.333, 4 HRs, 11 RBIs in 33 at-bats) and prospect Chase Headley are among San Diego outfield candidates.

• The Padres made their first extensive moves Tuesday. Catcher Colt Morton and pitcher Mauro Zarate have been optioned to Portland, and other expected Beavers have been reassigned to minor league camp - infielders Matt Antonelli, Edgar Gonzalez and Marshall McDougall, outfielders Drew Macias and (injured) Vince Sinisi, and pitchers Wade LeBlanc, Arturo Lopez and Paul Abraham.

Pitchers Josh Geer, who won a game in China, and Cesar Ramos were reassigned March 6.

Prospects Nick Hundley, a catcher, and Will Venable, an outfielder, have been reassigned to Class AA San Antonio.
