Quick action prevents blaze from spreading
An alert neighbor help prevent a garage fire in Northeast Portland from spreading to a nearby house.
According to Lt. Don Wagner of Portland Fire and Rescue, at around 5:30 a.m. Sunday morning, a neighbor spotted and reported a fire in a detached garage at 6719 N.E. Mallory. The neighbor also alerted the home's residents, who were able to safely evacuate.
When firefighters arrived about four minutes later, they found flames on all sides of the garage.
"Firefighters were very concerned about the fire spreading from the garage to the house and took precautionary actions to save the home," says Wagner.
Firefighters were quickly able to extinguish the fire and were recalled about 10 minutes after arriving. Investigators were called to the scene and are working to determine the cause. Damage estimates were not immediately available.
Wagner says the incident is a good example of why people should develop and practice an evacuation plan. A fire can happen at any time of the day or night, so be prepared to know your escape route and get out, he says.
