Braves, Vikings kick off track and field season

TRACK and FIELD: Local athletes start the season with a number of outstanding individual performances

The high school track and field season got under way last week with Banks hosting Taft and North Marion on Thursday and Forest Grove traveling to Sunset for a meet against Barlow and the host Apollos.

Among the highlights were four first-place finishes by Forest Grove athletes and 19 wins by Banks performers.

Leading the way for the Braves was sophomore Matt Cutone, who won both the 100 meters (11.86 seconds) and 200 meters (24.25). Freshman Linus Norgren took first place in the 400 meters (53.65).

Trevor Lundsten won the javelin in grand fashion. His throw of 156 feet, 11 inches was almost 40 feet better than the nearest competitor. Meanwhile, teammates Matt Hidalgo, Brad Brekke and Steven Murray all cleared 8 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault.

On the girls side, Erika Atkinson won the 100 meters (13.89), Jessica Markham won the 400 (1:03.86) and Alicia Reaser won the 800 (2:43.07). Kelsey Taylor swept the distance events, winning the 1,500 (5:39.08) and 3,000 (12:28.11).

Banks nearly swept the field events, failing to take first place only in the triple jump. Jasmine Teters won both the shot put (29'4") and discus (82'8"), while teammate Maggie McMillan took first place in the high jump (5'0"). Linda Kinsky won the pole vault (7'0") and Felicia Wilson finished first in the long jump (13'7").

Banks also won the girls 4x100 meter relay, as well as the boys 4x100 and 4x400 events.

Facing stiff competition at Sunset last Thursday, Forest Grove picked up four wins and a number of other notable performances.

Senior Eric Weinbender won the 800 meters in 2:03.61, then turned around and won the 1,500 in 4:20.90. Teammate Mario Parks made it a clean sweep of the distance events with a first-place finish in the 3,000 meters (10:30.21).

Nick Wallace nabbed the Viking boys' other first-place finish, winning the triple jump with a jump of 39 feet, 6.5 inches.

On the girls side, Chrissy Marshall was the only winner for Forest Grove, taking first in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:09.68. Sophomore Laura Matzke took second place in the 3,000 (11:43.05).

Elsewhere, Brandi Dawson finished second in the pole vault (8'6") and third in the long jump (14'4.5"). Elena Acosta took third in the 100 meters (13.83) and Jessica Hayes rounded things out with a fourth-place finish in the 400 (1:08.66) and a fifth-place finish in the 200 (30.54).

For the boys, Trevor Robbins had a second-place finish in the high jump (5'8"). Wallace took second in the javelin (140'1") and Nick Mulick was second in the triple jump (38'6").
