Forest Grove soldier gets surprise audience with Sen. John McCain

Marine Sgt. Geoffrey S. Kohlmeyer, a 2001 graduate of Forest Grove High School, recently got a quick audience with Arizona Sen. John McCain.

McCain, who is on track to become the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, made a surprise visit to Al Asad, Iraq, on March 15 and visited with U.S. troops there.

Kohlmeyer, 25, is a crew chief responsible for the maintenance of aircraft, according to his parents, Stan and Kay Kohlmeyer of Forest Grove. He also serves as a machine gunner for his unit, the VMM-263 Osprey squadron.

Kohlmeyer is serving his second tour in Iraq.
