Auction aids high school band department
Fund-raiser - Evening includes dancing to the music of the FGHS jazz ensemble, silent auction
The Forest Grove High School commons will reverberate with jazz music this Saturday during the annual Jazz Dinner Dance and Silent Auction.
The evening's proceeds will benefit the band program at FGHS, 1401 Nichols Lane.
A silent auction begins at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Under the direction of Leonard Ostwalt, Jazz Band musicians will perform jazz favorites in 'a relaxed setting of fine food and dance,' said band parent Fawn Canfield.
This year's theme is 'Jazz in the Northwest.' The event will be catered by local chef Maggie Pike of Maggie's Buns. Menu selections will include artichoke chicken over wild rice and ravioli with a trio of sauces. The meal includes a crisp salad and warm bread, with coffee and dessert to finish it off.
The meal will be served in style by FGHS band members.
Senior trombone and euphonium player Alicia Canfield, who has been involved in band since her freshman year, said she was looking forward to the auction.
'It's our biggest fund-raiser of the year,' she noted. 'It's really important, because if we didn't have that money, our marching band wouldn't have the opportunity to be nearly as successful,' she said.
Alicia's mother, Fawn, has helped organize the event for the last six years.
'What's unique about this is that the kids are putting the whole thing on,' she said. 'They're serving the dinner, providing the entertainment and even auctioning off services they'll provide, such as babysitting and yard work.'
Canfield said she expects about 200 people at Saturday's event. 'It's going to be a full blowout,' she said.
There's more to the event than dinner and music. A silent auction also will be in progress all evening Saturday, featuring merchandise from local business owners.
