Lakeridge High School musical variety show, Company Takes Manhattan runs from April 11-19
Thirty-two talented singers and dancers from Lakeridge High School's Company show choir will dazzle their audiences with 'Company Takes Manhattan,' on April 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19. A popular tradition at Lakeridge, the annual musical variety show will hit the stage in the Lakeridge auditorium.
Bill Campbell, Lakeridge Choir Director, said this year's two-hour show is better than ever with an eclectic mix of costumes and show tunes from famous hits such as 'Hairspray,' 'Chicago,' and 'Fame.'
In addition, contemporary ballads such as 'Falling Slowly,' the 2008 Achievement in Song Oscar winner from 'Once,' will be performed by Company members.
'The show is about us trying to make it in the big city. Every number is like an audition in Manhattan,' said Campbell, who added a New York night scene as a backdrop this year. 'I want the audience to get the sense that we are in New York and we are trying to get our big break as singers.'
For 'Saturday Night Live' fans, the variety show will feature the infamous song, 'Don't Fear the Reaper,' with Company members playing cowbell (in true Will Ferrell fashion), electric guitar, and drums.
In fact, Company students were required to come up with their own musical accompaniments or recordings for all solos, duets and ensembles, with the exception of a cappella numbers.
'This year's group is very talented musically and we have a number of great pianists, guitarists and percussionists,' said Campbell, who chose 31 musical numbers, including a Brazilian dance piece, 'Magdalena,' for this year's exciting show.
Company, which originated with the opening of Lakeridge in 1971, includes juniors and seniors who complete a two-part dancing and singing audition in the spring for the year-long Company choir class. The show choir performs regionally at schools, public events, private clubs and parties.
