Next: Oregon State (14-8, 2-1 Pac-10) faces a tough conference series this weekend at No. 7 California (19-6-1, 3-1).

• Oregon State is hitting .316 and averaging 8.0 runs a game, and junior designated hitter Jason Ogata says he kind of expected it.

'It doesn't surprise me at all,' Ogata says, batting .371 with four home runs and 28 RBIs. 'It's the total opposite of last season, when it took us a long time to get going.

'We have some great pitchers, but we were hitting them pretty well during the fall, and we were like, 'We can be a great hitting team.' '

• Drew George is leading the Beavers in batting average (.386) and is second in on-base percentage (.476) among the regulars, but the senior third baseman has a team-high seven errors.
