Centennial gets off to solid start in league play
BOYS TENNIS - The Eagles race past David Douglas 7-1
The Centennial boys tennis team started its 2008 campaign with a solid 7-1 win against David Douglas on Thursday afternoon.
The Eagles swept the four doubles matches, despite playing with a lineup filled with newcomers.
'A lot of those guys were playing their first varsity league match,' Centennial coach Mick Nelson said. 'There were a lot of close matches, but they stepped up and got the wins.'
The junior tandem of Vincent Phan and Derek Rattan highlighted the sweep with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 win in No. 1 doubles. The victory clinched the Eagles' team victory with two matches still on the courts.
The Centennial pair overcame a 3-1 deficit in the second-set tiebreaker, closing out the victory when Phan fired a low backhand shot that sent is Douglas foe to his knees for a return that ended up in the net.
The Eagles won three of the four singles bouts.
