Cavs sweep the Mustangs with three routs

The Cavaliers take no hostages in their series with Milwaukie, winning 12-0, 10-0 and 10-0

CLACKAMAS - Clackamas High School hardballers had to play three games on the road last week because of an unplayable rain-soaked outfield at Clackamas.

But the fourth-ranked Cavaliers didn't let it bother them, as they recorded three lopsided shutouts in their three-game series with Milwaukie, defeating the Mustangs 12-0, 10-0 and 10-0.

The Cavaliers (8-3, 4-1) were tied with Oregon City (7-3, 4-1) and Lake Oswego (6-5, 4-1) in first place in the Three Rivers League standings heading into this week's three-game series with Lake Oswego.

The ninth-ranked Lakers looked tough last week, winning two games in their three-game series with second-ranked West Linn.

'Our last two games we've played really, really well,' Clackamas coach John Arntson said following his team's first two shutouts of the Mustangs. 'Our pitchers have been fantastic, with 21 strikeouts, five hits and only one walk in 14 innings.

'We've played error-free defense, and we've come up with big hits. We're playing real well in all three phases of the game right now.'

Nick Struck pitched six innings in the 12-0 rout of the Mustangs, striking out 10, walking one, and allowing just one hit. Jake Nolte had two strikeouts and allowed a third hit in an inning of relief.

Ben Wetzler (7 strikeouts) allowed just two hits in six innings in the April 2 shutout of the Mustangs. Nolte finished up in the seventh, facing three batters and striking out two of them.

And the Cavaliers have been hitting the ball hard.

Struck helped his own cause with two singles and a second-inning grand slam in the 12-0 win. Corey Davis (2-for-2, double, 3 runs), Wetzler and Ryan Cook had two hits apiece, as the Cavaliers pounded out 13 hits.

The Cavaliers took charge early, scoring nine runs in the second inning on eight hits and three walks.

Nolte had a first-inning two-run home run in the 10-0 win on April 2. Davis (3-for-5) rapped a three-run double and had five RBI. Jon Walters had a pair of singles.

Clackamas plays at Lake Oswego today and, weather permitting, the Cavaliers entertain the Lakers this Friday.

In last week's games, the Cavaliers played two games with the Mustangs at Milwaukie, and the third game with the Mustangs at West Linn's artificial turf field.
