Gladiators 10-run Falcons, Huskies

Gladstone remains at the top of the heap in Capital Conference baseball

GLADSTONE - Gladstone High hardballers turned in a pair of impressive performances in Capital Conference games last week, posting five-inning, ten-run wins over La Salle (12-2) and North Marion (10-0).

The Gladiators fired up their bats for 12 hits and played error-free ball in the shutout of La Salle.

Thane Rice (2-for-2), Brady Regier (2-for-2) and Casey Young (2-for-4) led the offensive fireworks with two hits apiece. All three Gladstone seniors hit home runs.

Regier smacked a solo shot in the first frame, Rice tagged a two-run home run in the second, and Young hit a two-run blast in the fifth.

The Gladiators put the game away in the second inning, when they put seven runs on the scoreboard.

Gladstone pitchers Mason Larkins and Kevin Peterson combined for a two-hitter.

Larkins fanned two, walked six and allowed just one hit in four innings.

Peterson came in with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the fifth, and allowed just one run.

Eric Johnson played a strong defensive game at third base, handling several tough chances.

The Gladiators rallied around Bubba Armstrong and their bats to dispatch with North Marion. Armstrong (8 strikeouts, 2 walks) held the Huskies hitless except for a fourth-inning infield single.

Led by Young (2-for-4, RBI-double, 2 runs), Larkins (2-for-3, 2-run double, 2 runs) and Trey Durkee (2-for-3, 2-run double, 2 runs), the Gladiators reached North Marion pitchers for nine hits.

'Alex was the typical Bubba Armstrong,' said Gladstone coach Casey Webster. 'He throws hard and hits his spots, he's got a great breaking ball that he throws for strikes, and a good change-up. We feel pretty good when he's on the mound.'

Austen Cote was solid at first base, making three putouts, two of them unassisted.

The Gladiators (6-4, 4-0) finished last week atop the Capital Conference standings.

They were to conclude the first round of league play this week, playing Molalla (8-2, 4-1) on Monday and hosting Cascade (7-6, 2-2) in a makeup game on Tuesday.

Gladstone hosts North Marion (3-3, 2-2) this afternoon, and the Gladiators play at Estacada (0-6, 0-5) on Friday.
