Golfers eye mid-district tournaments next week

It couldn't possibly get much closer atop the Three Rivers League standings in girls golf. It looks like three teams will be in for a dogfight for the two berths at the state tournament.

After last Monday's event at Oswego Lake Country Club, West Linn and Lake Oswego are tied atop the standings with 30 points apiece while Lakeridge sits in third with 28 heading into next week's important mid-district event.

In what has become routine so far this year, the girls once again battled tough weather conditions which were not conducive to shooting low scores on Monday.

The Lions did manage the two lowest scores of the day, however. Sharon Shin earned medalist honors with a 41 and teammate Morgan Tompson was right on her heels, coming in with a solid round of 42.

Elie Enderle shot an even 50 for the Lions and Brianna Ruiz shot 56 to complete the scoring for the team.

It wasn't quite enough to top Lake Oswego though. The Lakers had three players shot in the 40s with Amy Beth Simanton and Kendall Prince each shooting 43 to finish in a tie for third.

Next week the teams travel to Stone Creek for the 18-hole mid-district tournament which counts double in the standings.

The winner of that event will have a leg up on the rest of the field towards earning a state berth as, after Monday, only two more tournaments remain before districts.

Meanwhile, the West Linn boys wound up in fifth place last Monday on a difficult day at Waverly Country Club.

Matt Percin had his team s low round of the day with an 84 while Jordan Hongo came in with an 86.

Once again, all four scoring players for West Linn broke 90 but the team was without low scores it would need to make up significant ground in the standings.

Jackson Henniger shot 88 for West Linn and Josh Peterson shot an 89.

Currently the team is fourth place in the Three Rivers League and will travel to Langdon Farms next week.

The distrcit tournament will be held at Stone Creek in Oregon City for both the boys and girls. State is at OGA in Woodburn for the girls and at Trystine Tree in Corvallis for the boys.
