Oregon State's softball team needs to sweep two weekend games against visiting Oregon for OSU to claim the Northwest Dodge Dealers Civil War series for 2007-2008.
Oregon leads OSU 8-7, but two points go to the winner of a three-game set of softball games. The Beavers won the first meeting 7-4 on April 2. Games 2 and 3 are 4 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday in Corvallis. The Beavers are 25-21 overall and 3-6 in Pac-10 play, while the Ducks are 26-19, 1-8.
Oregon claimed the Civil War series 9-8 last year, after OSU had won 12-5 the previous two years.
• Bill Grier, who chose to stay as the University of San Diego men's basketball coach instead of taking over at Oregon State, tells The San Diego Union-Tribune that he felt he would have been going to Corvallis 'for one reason, just for the money.'
Grier adds: 'Everybody says Oregon State is a bad job, and I disagree. I just think it's a hard job. It's a different job now than it was five years ago, because of how good the rest of the Pac-10 is. … It's going to be years before you see any progress.'
• Former Franklin High basketball standout Kenan Dizdarevic signed a letter of intent with Warner Pacific. The 5-9 guard played two years at Umpqua Community College, averaging 19 points per game last season.
