Girl dies at St. Helens school
A St. Helens Middle School student, Mikayla Langley, 14, collapsed and died Friday afternoon at the school.
Columbia River Fire and Rescue paramedics responded to a call at 2:49 p.m. and administered aid before transporting her to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland.
The student had apparently been participating in a physical education class and collapsed while going for a drink of water. Paramedics were unable to revive her.
The St. Helens School District sent out a letter to students and parents expressing their condolences, and made grief support available from counselors and psychologists.
The school also organized an evening vigil at the school 'in order to allow students to grieve with loved ones' according to the letter.
The family has established a memorial fund in the girl's name at US Bank in St. Helens.
Funeral and memorial service arrangements had not been made by Tuesday morning. Notice of services will be posted at The Spotlight's website, www.spotlightnews.net, as soon as they are available.
