Rugby team finishes regular season 4-1
by: John Brewington, The Operators’ Gabe Sprague moves picks up a few yards during Saturday’s match with Beaverton.

The Columbia County Operators were looking to finish division play unbeaten and earn the No. 1 seed to the state playoffs. It was not to be.

The Beaverton Barbarians steamrolled the local squad, 38-8. The Operators scored the last eight points of the contest.

Fullback Tyler Pellham scored three points on a penalty kick, and Aaron Brown scored the team's only try. It was the first A side match for Brown.

'We were down the entire match, but the boys never gave up,' coach Eric Bunday said. We have identified the areas we need to improve upon, and we're still holding the No. 2 seed from our division into the Division 1 playoffs.'

He added, 'The fact that we get to go to the Division 1 playoffs is a remarkable accomplishment in and of itself, considering that the seniors on this team were shut out in their first week of Division 2 when they were freshmen in 2005. They've come a long way and I am very proud of them. We have a few issues to iron out this week in practice, and I am confident that we will have a much better showing in the first week of the playoffs.'

The Operators will play a Linn-Benton team at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Delta Park in Portland. The Operators' B side is also playing in their own playoff bracket for the B side championship. Their semifinal match is on Saturday at Delta Park at 9:30 a.m. against Battle Ground B.
