BOYS GOLF - The host Gophers win their third tournament of the year
Centennial's Nick Chianello beat the rest of the field by a mile Thursday, April 17, at Gresham Golf Course.
The Eagles' junior earned medalist honors with a 5-under-par 67, highlighting his round with a near-eagle on the 459-yard, eighth hole. He reached the edge of the green in only two shots and his long eagle putt stopped inches short of the hole, leaving him a simple tap-in for birdie.
Chianello did most of his damage on the four par-5 holes, scoring three birdies along with an eagle on the 461-yard, 16th hole.
Centennial finished with a 312 team total to take fourth in a tight team race.
Gresham won its third tournament of the year with a 305 finish, beating runner-up Central Catholic by a single stroke.
Alex Spicer shot a 78 to provide the difference for the Gophers, beating the Rams' No. 4 scorer by three strokes.
Sam Mendez led Central with an even-par 72 to take second place in the overall standings. He was 4-over early on the back-nine, but finished strong with five birdies through the last eight holes. That included an up-and-down on the par-3, 15th hole. Teammate Jon Zelznik finished with a 77 - the best score posted by any of the No. 3 players.
Central continues to battle Gresham for the top spot in league with the Gophers taking a two-point lead in the overall standings going into this week's tournament at Persimmon Country Club in Gresham.
