Clothing store owners sponsor food drive
In an effort to support the local Oregon Food Bank, Langer Plaza shopping center retailers Casual Style and The Boutique joined forces in an unique promotion to both raise awareness and 300 pounds of food.
'I was shopping in a Tualatin center one morning and came across a lady looking through a garbage can,' said Ginny Stroupe, Sherwood resident and owner of the Boutique. 'I figured she was looking for cans, but when I saw her drinking from the recently discarded coffee cups, I was shocked. You just don't see that type of behavior on this side of the metropolitan area.'
Stroupe felt compelled to do something. She called the Oregon Food Bank and soon after contacted her business neighbor, Tami Spath of Casual Style. Spath and Stroupe brainstormed the concept of offering an incentive to their customers: throughout May, shoppers donating two cans of food will receive a 10-percent discount at both stores. Patrons bringing in more four or more cans can receive a maximum discount of 20 percent.
'The economy is tough,' explains Spath. 'As a small business owner, I see the impact on my store. And it makes sense: People are not able to spend as much on items such as new clothes when gas and other essentials become more expensive. Ginny and I hope that the local community can use the promotion to support the local economy while at the same time benefitting a worthy local cause.'
The stores are located on Langer Drive, a center off of Highway 99 and Sherwood Drive.
