Skate park mobs dispersed by Forest Grove Police

Update: two incidents, likely related, lead police to step up patrols

Forest Grove Police are increasing patrols at the Forest Grove Skate park following a pair of altercations that led to a mob.

Police were dispatched to the park, located at 2725 Main Street in Forest Grove, shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday evening to reports of a fight involving 20 people with approximately 30 onlookers.

When police arrived, they found a mob of about 50 people and called for backup from the Washington County Sheriff's office, Cornelius, Hillsboro and Oregon State Police.

The brawlers were uncooperative when questioned by police about who started the fight.

About an hour-and-a-half before that fight broke out, police broke up a smaller fight at the park.

Forest Grove Police will be conducting increased patrols in the area. In the coming weeks, officers will also conduct increased enforcement of park rules and city ordinances in the park.

Captain Aaron Ashbaugh, Forest Grove Police spokesman, said the cause of the fights was unclear, but he thought it was more of a teenage flare-up than anything sinister.

"Way too much testosterone in a small area," Ashbaugh said.
