SOFTBALL - Stevie Patnode makes game-saving catch in fourth inning
by: David Ball, Gresham center fielder Stevie Patnode makes a run toward the infield after making a play in center field during the Gophers' 1-0 win over David Douglas on Friday afternoon.

The Gresham softball team came up with the big plays when it mattered most to beat David Douglas 1-0 on Friday, April 25.

The Scots tried to break up the scoreless game in the fourth inning, but Gresham's Stevie Patnode broke quickly on the ball in shallow center field and made a sliding catch just off the top of the grass. A Douglas runner crossed home plate on the play, but the umpire ruled her out for leaving third base too soon.

'We were playing pretty team on that one, but I was confident I could get there in time,' Patnode said. 'I had to make a slide to get it, but it was crucial to make that play.'

Gresham did its damage in the bottom of the fourth when Ashley Good hit a two-out, two-strike single through the middle of the infield to bring across the only run of the game.

Good also was the game's winning pitcher, throwing a complete-game shutout with six strikeouts.
