Another pedestrian injured on SE Powell Blvd.

by: David F. Ashton, S.E. Powell Boulevard was closed into the evening hours while officers from the Major Crash Team investigated the accident.

A portion of S.E. Powell Boulevard, near Cleveland High School, was shut down for several hours on Thursday, April 17th, while Portland Police Bureau officers investigated yet another car-versus-pedestrian accident there.

'At 2:20 pm, Southeast Precinct officers were dispatched to the 3000 block of S.E. Powell Boulevard on a pedestrian-involved hit and run accident,' reported police spokesman Sgt. Brian Schmautz.

Arriving officers determined that 56-year-old Terry McFie was walking southbound across the boulevard when he was hit by a Ford pickup truck. Witnesses said that the truck was exiting the parking lot of a nearby tavern, and was in the process of merging on to S.E. Powell Boulevard, when it struck McFie.

'The driver of the pickup apparently stopped for a short time and rendered aid to McFie, before leaving the area,' stated Schmautz.

At first, McFie didn't appear to be seriously injured, witnesses said. But apparently the victim's condition deteriorated after he was transported to the hospital at Oregon Health Sciences University.

'From witnesses' statements, officers identified the suspect as 46-year-old Gordon Litner of Salem, Oregon. Officers made phone contact with the suspect, who agreed to return to Portland and surrender.

'Because the victim took a turn for the worse,' Schmautz added, 'the Traffic Division sent out the Major Crash Team to process the scene.'

The suspect did turn himself in that evening, and was booked into jail. Litner is charged with one count each of Felony Hit and Run and DUII. The victim is currently recovering from surgery, and is expected to survive his injuries.
