With one week remaining, Sunset leads Westview in state race

ROCK CREEK - The stakes could not have been higher in Monday's Metro League boys golf tournament at Rock Creek Country Club.

The Sunset and Westview boys golf teams entered the match tied for second, and more importantly, tied for the Metro's second berth to the Class 6A state tournament.

But the Apollos made sure those standings didn't remain tied - Sunset shot 327 on Monday to finish second behind Jesuit's league-best total of 318, and in doing so, took a two-point lead over Westview in the season-long points race that determines team berths to state. Westview finished third Monday at 332.

Now, with just Monday's regular season-ending match at Meriwether National Golf Club in Hillsboro remaining - play starts at 2:30 p.m. - Sunset's boys can clinch the league's second berth to state by either beating or tying the Wildcats.

Should Westview finish ahead of Sunset on Monday, the second berth would be determined by a league tiebreaker.

Sunset senior Logan Gerritz lifted his team to victory on Monday by shooting a league-best total of 73 at Rock Creek. On a day that saw just six players break 80, Gerritz's total was good for a two-stroke victory over Beaverton junior Christian Boudreau, who finished at 75.

Also scoring for Sunset were sophomore Tudor Bertea at 83, senior Tyler Parker at 85, Sunset sophomore Joe Rayburn at 86 and Sunset junior Cole Papazian at 86.

Westview, meanwhile, was led by senior John Abercrombie's 79, senior Sean Daoud's 82, Mitch Baines' 85, sophomore Harry Chang's 86 and sophomore Lane Stiles' 94.

Jesuit, which has already secured the league's regular season championship and top berth to state, saw Jake Coleman notch a 76, Sam Kloenne shoot 79, Jeff Petroff card an 80, Adam Strength check in at 83 and Nick Jarrett score 87.
