Former Forest Grove school chief Irvin Nikolai arrested on sex abuse charges
UPDATE: 71-year-old posts bail, will appear in court May 16
Hillsboro Police arrested former Forest Grove Schools superintendent Irvin Nikolai this morning in La Grande, Ore, on sex abuse charges.
Lt. Michael Rouches, Hillsboro Police Spokesman, said that detectives arrested Nikolai, 71, at 8 a.m. Friday, May 2. His son posted bail by paying $100,000 Tuesday, May 6 at 11 p.m..
Nikolai will appear in Washington County Circuit Court on May 16 at 8:30 a.m. to face the charges.
Nikolai was superintendent of the Forest Grove School District from 1990 to 1999, and is currently interim superintendent of the La Grande School District.
'His job, really, as a superintendent is to be an advocate for children and this lets us all down,' Rouches said.
Rouches said that the investigation began in April, after a 7-year-old girl told her parents that Nikolai touched her inappropriately while attending a birthday party in Hillsboro.
A grand jury issued a secret indictment of four counts of sex abuse April 28.
Nikolai owns homes in Forest Grove and La Grande.
Rouches said Nikolai has no criminal record, but said other accusations could arise while police continue to investigate.
'Typically child sex abusers don't just start at age 71," Rouches said. "We don't know if there are any other victims out there but there could be,'
