Tribe track boys whip Y-C; girls edged

Yamhill-Carlton no match for boys; girls just a bit short
by: John Brewington, The Tribe’s Stacy Marshall takes a shot at 10 feet in the pole vault during last Thursday’s meet with Yamhill-Carlton. Marshall is ranked third among 4A pole vaulters in the state.

The Scappoose High boys track team didn't have a lot of problems downing Yamhill-Carlton in a double dual meet on Thursday, but the girls were just a bit short.

Valley Catholic also competed in the meet, but the scoring was dual for Cowapa League purposes.

Kevin Carpenter cruised to wins in the 100 and 200 meters, while Jared Graham had 400 and 800 victories. Robbie Greisen took first in the 3000 against Yamhill-Carlton but did finish behind a VC runner. Max Barth and Apostolis Bakouros were 1-2 in the high hurdles, and Bakouros had a first against the Tigers in the intermediate hurdles. Scappoose also won both relays against Y-C, but were second in the 4x400 with Valley Catholic counted in.

Field events found Scappoose winning just the long jump and triple jump. Barth and Pearson were 1-2 in the triple jump, and Pearson also won the long jump.

For the Scappoose girls, Stacy Marshall waited until 9 feet before even starting in the pole vault, 6 inches higher than where the other competitors finished. Marshall would go 10-0.

Coach David Harley said she was currently ranked third in the 4A state, with two other girls having gone 11 feet.

'Stacy is having a great season - she works very hard and has a strong mental aspect to her that makes her very competitive,' Harley said. ' It has been fun to watch her get better and better each year, and she has a real shot to do very well at the state meet later this month. She was a little off this week because she's just back from a three-week trip.'

Vicki Moore recorded another first in the 100 with Rachael Sykes taking second. The girls won the 4x100 relays, but were disqualified in the 4x400. Christina Hickman, Chloe Wight, Moore and Kristine Wheeler ran the fast relay.

Rebecca Rafferty had double firsts, winning the shot and the discus
