St. Helens squad wins four games in first outing
The St. Helens Lions 12-and-under fastpitch team won their opening tournament of the season, a four-game round robin in Newberg over the weekend.
The team opened up the tournament with a 9-1 win over the West Valley 'Hericanes.' Susanah Sass and Karli Edwards handled the pitching duties, limiting West Valley to just three hits and striking out five batters between them.
The team scored three runs in each of the first two innings, two in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Top hitters for the club were Nicole Harcourt, going three for four, Sass and Edwards at two for three, and Marissa Sanchez two for two.
The club faced a West Linn sixth-grade team in their next outing and pummeled them 17-1. Brooke Cathers pitched two innings and Mariah Mulcahy two in the four-inning affair. Cathers struck out four and didn't give up a hit, while Mulcahy gave up just one hit, and struck out two. They had just three walks. West Linn walked 19 St. Helens batters in the game and the Lions had just six hits.
The toughest game of the tournament pitted St. Helens against Winston. The Lions were shorthanded in the Sunday outing, and Winston struck out 12 batters in the game. Cathers pitched nearly five innings and gave up just three hits, while striking out four. Edwards and Sass each pitched an inning. Edwards gave up two hits and Sass none.
St. Helens had the early 1-0 lead, Mulcahy scoring on a single by Sanchez. Winston jumped into the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but St. Helens came back to close with one in the sixth.
Going into the seventh, St. Helens was down by two. Taylor Alberston led off with a single, and Sanchez reached base on a bunt. After two outs, Edwards singled to score Albertson. Sass then singled to score Sanchez and tie the game. Stevie Strawn followed with another single to load the bases, then Cathers drilled a two-run double to put St. Helens ahead. Sass pitched the bottom of the frame and didn't allow a runner on base, striking out two.
St. Helens finished up the tournament with a 12-2 win over the West Linn seventh-grade team. The game was close early but St. Helens took charge with five runs in the third and fourth innings. Edwards and Sass were both three for three in the contest, each scoring three times. Edwards had two RBIs. Cathers went two for two with two runs scored. Mulcahy was two for three with a run and four RBIs.
