Police arrest transient for unsolved 1994 murder

Portland police detectives have arrested a 40-year-old man in connection with a 1994 murder.

Members of the police bureau's cold case unit arrested Tuesday evening Terry Lavell Haynes and charged him with one count of murder for the homicide of 62-year-old Raymond Lee Johnson.

Haynes, a transient, was spotted by cold case detectives at Northeast Lombard Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard where he was arrested at about 6:41 p.m. Haynes was lodged in the Multnomah County Jail and will be arraigned Wednesday.

On May 8, 1994, at about 7:11 a.m., Portland police officers assigned to North Precinct responded to 705 N.E. Skidmore St. where they found Johnson's body inside the home. The case was unsolved.

Cold case homicide detectives re-examined the investigation last year and decided to arrest Haynes.

A Multnomah County grand jury will consider the case against Haynes this week.
