Young, Schindler gear up for 2008 Les Schwab Bowl

One Laker and one Pacer will represent the city of Lake Oswego at this Saturday's Les Schwab Bowl.

Running back Zach Young, who played for Lake Oswego last year, will be one of the featured backs for the North team while Lakeridge lineman Luke Schindler will look to help the North team win its fourth Les Schwab Bowl in a row.

Young was the Three Rivers League's Player of the Year on offense in the 2007 season and proved to be one of the best running backs in the state.

His quickness and ability to hit holes in the line proved difficult for most teams to handle.

'He's very quick and hard to get a good hit on,' Laker coach Steve Coury said.

Young, who transferred to Lake Oswego from Lakeridge, took on a heavy load for a team that made yet another deep run into the playoffs and captured a league title.

'He was our workhorse. He carried the ball at least 20 times a game and had one game where he carried the ball 36 times,' Coury said.

Next year, Young will play at Santa Rosa Junior College, one of the most competitive junior colleges on the West Coast and he will look to make an immediate impact to potentially move up to a Division I program.

'He's going to get a lot of looks. It's just a matter of whether he can take the physical pounding. He has the ability and the vision he's only lacking in size,' Coury said.

Schindler made an impact for Lakeridge on both sides of the ball. He made first-team all-league as an offensive tackle and second team all-league as a defensive tackle last year.

On defense, Schindler had the unenviable task of chasing down athletic quarterbacks and quick running backs in the Three Rivers League while, on offense, Schindler helped provide protection in a wide-open offense.

Schindler also made his presence known at Lakeridge in the classroom. He was on the honor roll all four years and was named 'student of the quarter' six times. He was also a National Football Foundation Scholarship semifinalist.

Schindler is currently undecided on where he will attend college in the fall.

The Les Schwab Bowl will be held this Saturday, June 21 at PGE Park in Portland. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. The North team won last year's contest convincingly 42-14.
