Homer hands Bruins heart break

6A SOFTBALL - Oregon City puts up three runs in the second inning to gain control
by: David Ball
Barlow’s Jessica Butkins slides into third base after leading off the fourth inning with a single in the Bruins’ 2-0 playoff loss to West Salem on Monday.

One swing of the bat ended Barlow season Monday during a 2-0 loss to West Salem in the first round of the OSAA 6A state playoffs.

Deadlocked in a scoreless battle that seemed destined for extra innings, the visiting Titans put a quick end to those thoughts when Taylor Castro stepped into the batter's box to lead off the seventh inning.

A loud ting could be heard among a large crowd gathered behind the backstop, and there was no doubt about where this ball would land as it sailed high over the center-field fence for a monstrous home run.

The Titans added two more singles with Allina Haven scoring an insurance run on a Barlow throwing error.

Barlow had no answer in the bottom of the seventh, capping a stretch that saw 11 straight batters go down.
