A fire above The Green Exchange thrift shop near Milwaukie destroyed two apartments and killed a cat Wednesday afternoon.

Steve McAdoo, spokesman for Clackamas Fire District No. 1, said the fire appeared to start on the stovetop. The building is located near the intersection of Southeast Courtney Street and McLoughlin Boulevard. A man living in one of the two apartments above the store started to heat oil in a pan, forgot about it and ran to the store. When he returned, his apartment was on fire.

McAdoo said firefighters brought the blaze under control in 30 minutes, but the rear apartment was completely destroyed, and the other unit suffered severe smoke damage.

The Green Exchange suffered some damage, mainly in the rear section of the store, where there was smoke and water damage.
