The first Summerfield Showcase in September 2009 was so successful that organizers are holding another one June 4 and 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to promote the 55-plus community in Tigard.
The idea for the original event was hatched because a lot of homes were on the market, and residents wanted to introduce people from all over the metro area to the 'hidden gem' that is uniquely Summerfield.
'A lot of the same people who volunteered before are volunteering again,' said co-chair Diana Miller. 'They know what to do and can just run with it. We are confident that all the volunteers know what they're doing.'
Co-chair Ken Miller explained that one difference this year is the entertainment, which will be provided both days in the clubhouse by talented Summerfield residents with acts ranging from a piano duet to a Sonny and Cher impersonation.
'Last year we used paid entertainment, and this year we're paying with hamburgers,' Ken said. 'I think one of the fun things about the last Showcase is that it brought the people who live here together. It was like a church social, and this time the residents will be able to enjoy the barbecue lunch - last time it was only for the guests.'
However, there is a bit of an ulterior motive behind offering food to the residents.
'We want the residents to talk to the guests about what they like about Summerfield,' Diana said. 'For instance, one of the things I like about Summerfield is that it is so safe and well-maintained.
'And the trade show is really big this time. We hope people will pay attention to it because guests can find out all out the clubs and activities in Summerfield.
'Plus, people can walk around the clubhouse, and there will be someone in every room to talk to, like the card room and the arts and crafts room and the library.'
Ken, who is a Realtor, pointed out that the open houses at properties for sale will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
A map will be provided to guests so that they may visit any of the homes, townhouses and condos for sale that are open, and many Realtors will offer refreshments and giveaways.
In addition to single-family residences, townhouses and condominiums for sale, there are apartments in the Summerfield 55-plus community plus those at Summerfield Retirement Estates for rent.
Summerfield amenities include a nine-hole executive golf course, tennis courts, a swimming pool and a newly decorated clubhouse.
People are encouraged to stop by the clubhouse to pick up an information packet before taking part in the various tours and activities.
Showcase highlights will include:
* Barbecue lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Everyone who checks in at the clubhouse will be treated to burgers, hot dogs, chips and soda; guests who are not yet Summerfield residents will receive coupons for free golf.
* Golf course tours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Private tours of the course will be provided by Summerfield residents who will transport guests in golf carts.
* Bus tours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The Summerfield Retirement Estates bus will pick up guests at the clubhouse and take them on a guided tour of Summerfield, stopping at the Estates to drop off those who would like to take a tour and enjoy some specially prepared food and drink.
At the Estates, which is unveiling a new Wellness Center, guests can enjoy live entertainment, free 15-minute massages, free blood pressure checks, an introduction to Zumba gold, an introduction to chair yoga and barbecue goodies; in addition, there will be five raffles held each day.
