Eastrose Fellowship Universalist Church schedules summer events
Eastrose Fellowship Unitarian Universalist Church, 1133 N.E. 181st Ave., is offering the following 'Children's Creativity Summer Breaks,' from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays in July.
July 6: 'Pioneer Children'
Since the arrival of Lewis and Clark only 205 years ago, Oregon has undergone tremendous change. Looking for a better life for their families, pioneers traveled thousands of miles on foot and by wagon. This event features pioneer games, old songs, stories of life on the trail and pioneer crafts such as candle making, sewing, and quill pen making. Participants will cook up some Johnnycakes as well.
July 13: 'Nurture Nature'
Children will learn about worm composting and creating some fun take-home container gardens to water, care for and enjoy during the summer. Participants will also study helpful garden bugs and think of ways to reduce, reuse and recycle in the garden.
July 20: 'For the Birds'
Children will look into the secret life of birds, including wrens, finches and swallows. Participants will learn about their diets, behaviors, calls and habitats. Each child will fashion a wooden bird feeder to take home.
July 27: 'Frida for Kids'
The life and work of Frida Kahlo, Mexico's most famous woman painter, will be explored along with the indigenous culture of her beloved Mexico. Her amazing biography has a message of hope and bravery that has been geared to children. Children will try some of her favorite foods, explore self-identity with art and discuss the role of emotion in human creation.
Registration for each break is limited to eight children, ages 4-11. Cost is $4 per class, and covers supplies and a snack. Children are asked to wear clothes that can get dirty and to bring lunch and sunscreen.
Free music lessons
The church will also offer free music lessons for children ages 6-10, from 10:30 a.m. to noon Fridays, July 8, 15 and 22. This will also serve as a sneak preview of the Children's Peace Choir program of Eastrose Fellowship that runs from September through May.
