Pacer football suffers tough loss

Not much went right for the depleted Lakeridge football team last Friday against Oregon City.

With a pair of solid defensive performances under their belts against Crater and Sunset, the Pacers thought they might be able to hang with an improving Oregon City team that snuck into the playoffs last season.

However, after a decent first quarter of play, the wheels came off for Lakeridge, culminating in a 43-0 loss to the Pioneers.

Oregon City ran up and down the field to the tune of 312 net yards and quarterback Zach Roberts was efficient when he threw the ball, going eight for 11 for 231 yards and three touchdowns.

The result was a Pioneer offense that was difficult to stop all evening.

And the Pacers couldn't find many answers when they had the ball.

Lakeridge only turned the ball over once but struggled to get into any kind of rhythm, only picking up 10 first downs on the night.

Lakeridge quarterback Ben Swinford is still adjusting to the speed of the varsity game and completed seven passes for a total of 80 yards. Six different Lakeridge receivers made catches with Conner Duwelius being the favorite target.

The senior pulled down three passes for 53 yards.

Oregon City got on the board in the first quarter when Justin Gates scored on a nine-yard run.

He would also run in the two-point conversion.

But things didn't go south until the second quarter.

Oregon City put three more touchdowns on the board. Gates scored one more on a one-yard run and then the Pioneers struck through the air.

Roberts connected with Richie Unfried for a 70-yard scoring strike and he later hit Ronnie Simmons from 30 yards out. At the half the score was 29-0.

Oregon City had 10 players receive carries in the game as they ran the ball almost exclusively in the second half.

In the third quarter, Preston Christensen scored on a 31-yard jaunt and Matt Edgel scored the game's final touchdown from three yards out.

Lakeridge, which has the majority of its players competing on both sides of the ball, is also dealing with a handful of injuries putting an added strain on those players who are healthy.

The road doesn't get easier in the near future for the Pacers as this Friday is the Civil War game against No. 1 Lake Oswego.
