Northwest has potential to develop airplane biofuels industry
Consortium says region has what it takes to create new industry
The Northwest has what it takes to create a viable biofuels industry for airplanes, according to a new consortium, Sustainable Aviation Fuels Northwest.
Airports in Portland, Seattle-Tacoma and Spokane teamed with Boeing, Alaska Airlines and Washington State University to explore the feasibility of creating a Northwest aviation biofuels industry. After releasing a 10-month on May 25, the group concluded the region has the diverse feedstocks, fuel-delivery infrastructure and political will needed to build a viable industry here. Possible fuels include oil seeds, forest residues, solid waste and algae.
