smith places at last chance meet

Pacific junior Nicole Smith placed in three events on May 22 as the 2011 track and field season concluded with the George Fox Last Chance Meet, held at Colcord Field.

Smith, who competed in the javelin for the first time in her career during the heptathlon competition at last month's West Coast Invitational, placed fourth in George Fox's small meet meant to serve as a last chance qualifier for the NCAA Division III Championships. Her mark of 106 feet, 8 inches, was the best by a Pacific athlete this season.

Smith also finished with a season best in the long jump, placing third with a leap of 16 feet, 7¼ inches. She completed her day with a second-place finish in the 100 meters with a time of 13.08 seconds.

Smith was the only Pacific athlete to place in the meet. Avery Neal made the start list in the men's 800 meters, but did not finish.

viking basketball clinic scheduled

The Forest Grove boys basketball program will be hosting a youth clinic from June 13-17.

The Viking Hoop Camp is geared toward the instruction of fundamentals to each individual athlete. A major portion of each day will be dedicated to the mastery of the fundamental aspects of the game.

A typical day will consist of warm-ups, team and full-court drills, individual instruction, and advanced offensive skill development. Also, we will spend extra time working on team offenses and defenses.

The camp will cost $60 per player and will be divided into two sessions. Players in grades 3-6 will play from 9 a.m. to noon each day, and players in grades 7-10 will play from 1-4 p.m. The camp fee includes a T-shirt and Viking logo basketball.

forest grove will host 5k run/walk

The Forest Grove cross country program will be hosting a twilight run/walk event on Thursday, July 28.

The annual Viking Vengeance will include a 5K run and walk with a free .45-mile kids' run. The course starts at Forest Grove High School and follows a flat route of mostly roads and sidewalk.

Pre-registration will cost $15, while day-of-event registration will be $20. A gift T-shirt is available for an additional $15. An awards ceremony will follow the race with ribbons awarded in standard five-year age divisions.

All proceeds of the event go to the Forest Grove cross country program, which has grown from 10 members in 2000 to 70 members in 2010. The team has qualified runners for the OSAA state championships eight years in a row and has sent nine alumni to run at the college level. The Viking Vengeance fund raiser helps the co-ed team enter prestigious invitational meets, such as Nike Pre-Nationals.
