Local residents receive degrees from UP
The following Forest Grove area residents graduated May 7 from the University of Portland: Banks - Kristen Schmidlin, bachelor's degree in nursing. Cornelius - Victoria Kittler, bachelor's degree in global business; Taryn Raschein, bachelor's degree in biology. Forest Grove - Hannah Pike, bachelor's degree in global business; Scott Stewart, bachelor's degree in nursing. Gaston - Mark Durbetaki, bachelors degree in secondary education; Nathan Whitmore, bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
Forest Grove's Condon graduates from West Point
Forest Grove native Matthew Condon was one of more than 1,000 cadets in the United States Military Academy graduating with the Class of 2011. The class was graduated May 21 at West Point, N.Y., and later that day were commissioned and sworn in as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army. First Lady Michelle Obama was the banquet speaker. Condon, 22, graduated from Forest Grove High School in 2007. He is the son of Curtis and Miriam Condon of Forest Grove.
Top spellers compete in Spanish 'bee'
Fifth-grader Lily James from Vose Elementary in Beaverton was the winner of the first annual Donaldo Macedo Invitational Spanish Spelling Bee, hosted by the Forest Grove School District at Cornelius Elementary May 24. The bee drew 36 top spellers from Forest Grove, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Salem and Portland. James earned an opportunity to compete at the national Spanish Spelling Bee in July in New Mexico.
