Preliminary statistics for the 2011 Memorial Day holiday weekend period indicate fewer statewide traffic fatalities and a 20 percent increase in DUII arrests by Oregon State Police troopers in comparison to 2010 statistics.
This year's Memorial Day holiday reporting period began at 6 p.m., May 27, and concluded May 30 at 11:59 p.m.
According to ODOT's Fatality Analysis Reporting System, three people died in three separate fatal traffic crashes in Oregon during this year's reporting period. OSP troopers investigated each of this year's fatal crashes, one of which was pedestrian-involved and the other two were unrestrained vehicle occupants.
Six people died during the 2010 Memorial Day holiday period, and five fatalities were reported during the 2009 holiday period.
