Inner Southeast students score in spelling bee, win scholarships
Two local students represented Portland Public Schools in a county-wide spelling contest in May.
Isao Hardy of Richmond Elementary School, and Benjamin Klatchko of Winterhaven K-8 School in the Brooklyn neighborhood, each won first place in a district spelling bee, then advanced to the contest held at the Multnomah Educational Service District building near the Portland Airport.
Another Winterhaven student, Dominic Debettencourt, was a runner-up speller in the grades 3-5 division.
Meanwhile, two Cleveland High School seniors were awarded scholarships from the Portland Association of Teachers.
Marcella Loprinzi Hardin and Joan Pioli were two of the six student recipients (PAT members' children), who were adjudged not only to have demonstrated academic excellence, but also active involvement in community and volunteer activities.
