Music by the Sellwood Middle School Jazz Band filled air, as shoppers - and rain - came pouring into the Moreland Farmers Market's sixth-season opening day on Wednesday afternoon, May 11.

'We're sure happy about the turnout,' remarked Market Manager Ted Lee, as he watched the many shoppers visit the 30 vendors open for business.

'It's still early in the season, and it's been wet in Oregon this year,' Lee observed. 'As time goes on, you'll see plenty more vegetables and fruits, as they come into season.'

Now in his second season as Market Manager, Lee mused, 'It's fun to come every week; and as the growing seasons change, watch the wide variety of produce come into the market, and be displayed in the vendor stalls.'

New this year to the farmers market is Olympic Provisions, a well-known name in Portland for sausages. Also this year, Arcane Cellars is the new market winery, and Gee Creek Farms is bringing in seasonal vegetables and milled grains.

'We're pleased to have a wood-fired stone hearth bakery from Vancouver here - Russell's Bakery,' Lee added. 'And, many of our original vendors are still with us.'

A core of about 20 volunteers help set up, operate, and take down the market every Wednesday. Most of the season it's open from 3:30 until 7:30 pm at S.E. Bybee Boulevard at S.E. 14th Avenue, in the Wilhelm's Portland Memorial Funeral Home parking lot.

'We can always use more volunteers,' Lee invited. Contact him by e-mail at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
