LOCR qualifies five rowers for nationals
- Lake Oswego Review - Sports
Vancouver Lake proved to be a winning venue for two teams from Lake Oswego Community Rowing during the Vancouver Lake Regionals competition held the weekend of May 20-22. Months of training paid off when five rowers qualified for berths at US Rowing's upcoming national championship competition.
The Men's Varsity 4+ team of David Grossman, Santiago Beltran-Laborde, Jake Shimkus, Ilia Savin, and coxswain Ali Lim nabbed third place in the Vancouver competition -- solid enough to win a spot at Nationals. In addition, Beltran-Laborde and Savin will represent LOCR in the Men's Varsity 2 race, having finished second in their field at Regionals.
Other medal-winning teams at Vancouver Lake were the first place Men's 2nd Novice 4+ group of Aaron Evans, Leon Beltran-Laborde, Gabe Sandler, Tanner Sousa and coxswain Izzy Lim, and the third place Men's Novice 4+ of Whit Anderson, Nick Doering, Tad Pierce, Will Clark, and coxswain Tanner Sousa.
The Women's High School 8+ team representing Lake Oswego High School netted a second place finish in their category, which requires all team members be from the same high school. The rower and coxswain team included Mikaela VanEaton, Hannah Schelonka, Sierra Sweigert, Colleen Condon, Molly Agan, Kim Knight, Maggie Clark, Rachel Skene and Sarah Richardson.
The US Rowing Youth National Championships will be held in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, June 10-12, where more than 1,500 rowers from all over the U.S. will compete for national titles.
