New award instituted honoring Ralph Painer

Will Lawrence receives first inspirational award
by: John Brewington Will Lawrence, the first recipient of the Ralph Painter Memorial Track & Field award.

Several members of the 1974 championship track team presented a new 'inspirational' track award last week, in honor of Rainier Police Chief Ralph Painter. He was a member of that team. He was tragically killed last January.

The inscription reads:

'Ralph ran cross country and track for St. Helens High School between the years of 1972-1974.  He was a distance runner, a team player and an inspiration to all of his teammates.  His passion for running continued throughout his college years and law enforcement career.  Ralph became Chief of Police for the city of Rainier, Oregon in 2006.  He died in the line of duty on January 5, 2011.'

This year's award went to junior Will Lawrence, a state placer in the 400 meters, on this year's track team. Presenting the award were Jeff Heller, coach Gene Strehlou, Joe McGilvra, brother Alan Painter, Jeff Edwards, Marc Knudsen, and Rick Broders.

The award will be presented annually.
